What is web copywriting?
Web copy is simply the words that you use on your website. It could be blog posts, pages or most importantly your home page. Why is the home page so important? Generally, the majority of your web traffic comes to your home page. Usually the homepage has the most links, and is referred to the most. So, that’s where you’ll have to make your best first impression. Web copywriting is the science/art of writing to influence your visitors to do what they need to do so you can help them. Good web copywriting helps you make more sales, get more people signed up on your email list, and gets them to click through to all the interesting and valuable information and products on your website. Web copywriting commonly uses NLP or Neuro-Linguistic Programming methodology to influence people. Example: “When you work with me as your business coach, you’ll be able to easily double your web conversions in a few months.” In that sentence, it’s presumed that you’re already working with me, and the way the sentence is written puts the thought in your head subliminally. It’s not a trick, just a method of marketing that allows us to help more people.
Why is web copywriting important to you and your business?Knowing how to write effective web copy helps you get the results you want from your website or business. What results? You’ll see more sales of products or services, email list signups, more time on your site, more pages visited (good data for Google to rank your site better), and basically, more of your site visitors will follow your clear call to action. Is there a Model We can Follow?The model that I’ve found to work best is a three step model.
- Hook – Grab their attention. What’s the major problem you’re helping them solve? What do they strongly desire?
- Benefits, Results, Emotions – What’s in it for them? What benefits will they get? What results could they expect? How will they feel? This is good to do with bullet points.
- Call to Action – clear, concise, direct
What’s a good methodology to get started? “I don’t feel confident in my writing …”A great way to get started is to simply get started. You’re obviously reading this page, you can also read the other blogs in the web copywriting category. So now it’s time to implement what you’ve learned. Just set aside 15 minutes to a half hour and either write in a notebook or online word document or a draft page or post on your website. Sleep on it, and come back to review and edit your work. Are there extra words, is there good word variation? Did you catch all the spelling mistakes? What would the reader think? Get feedback from a couple of friends (preferably successful entrepreneurs or marketing experts). Did you follow the model? Remember to keep your clients in mind when you write. Do what you can to answer their questions, help them, solve their problems and make their lives better.
